MGM GRAND DETROIT PREPARES FOR FALL GRAND GARDEN, GIVES BACK TO LOCAL COMMUNITY
Detroit’s Favorite Destination Donates Greenery from Summer Grand Garden Display to Local Organizations

DETROIT – September 16, 2008 - On the heels of summer, MGM Grand Detroit will remove its Grand Garden colorful blooms, lush plants and plump shrubbery - making way for a new fall display - that will be donated to The Greening of Detroit and the Belle Isle Conservatory.

"We are excited to receive the donation to replace the old palm trees that have reached their maximum height in the 85- foot dome", said Brad Dick, deputy director, City of Detroit General Services Department. "MGM and Hamilton Anderson obviously recognize the importance of preserving the beauty and educational elements that the City of Detroit's Conservatory provides to its community."

MGM Grand Detroit worked in conjunction with Hamilton Anderson Associates - a Detroit-based architecture and design firm - to coordinate the installation and removal of the summer display. Hamilton Anderson has been responsible for guiding and implementing the design of each installation, which takes into account both cost effectiveness and environmental responsibility. In an effort to be green, MGM Grand Detroit has recycled plant materials from each of its Grand Garden displays by transferring appropriate materials from one installation to the next. The construction of the upcoming fall Grand Garden will begin September 22, 2008.

"We believe that each of our Grand Garden designs contributes something special to the community. Whether it be showcasing 1,200-pound pumpkins from a local grower or magnificent 35-foot imported palm trees, each display offers a unique take on the seasons for locals and visitors of our proud city to enjoy," said John Hutar, MGM Grand Detroit's, vice president of hotel operations. "Our commitment to the community includes being environmentally responsible in the planning and execution of our designs."

The Greening of Detroit works to inspire and grow a "greener" Detroit through planting and educational programs, environmental leadership, advocacy, and building the community. The Greening of Detroit will be receiving 153 Double Knock Out Rose shrubs in addition to 81 Buffalo Juniper shrubs for a variety of Detroit Public School projects, including school yard habitats, outdoor classrooms, pocket parks and greenways.

The Belle Isle Conservatory, located on Detroit's Belle Isle in the Detroit River, will receive the centerpieces of the summer Grand Garden display: 12 stately palm trees imported from Florida ranging from 10-35 feet in height. The new trees will replace the current palms in the Conservatory, which have reached the maximum 85-foot limit of the building's ceiling. The Conservatory also will receive 25 brightly colored Hibiscus plants, a mix of 60 smaller tropical plants and three Agave plants.
